Signs You Need A New Floor Installed

by Vanessa Douglas

Flooring replacements may not be a regular occurrence in your home, but they are occasionally needed. For your flooring replacement, you can choose from a wide array of flooring materials, ranging from stone or carpet to cork or vinyl and more. Here are some signs you may need a new floor installed.

1. Your current floor is damaged

One obvious reason to replace your flooring with a new floor installation is that your current floor is badly damaged. For instance, if you have a carpet with a mold problem, a laminate floor that has large sections of delamination, or a  wood floor that's been severely gouged in a lot of places, a replacement may be in order.

2. Your flooring material isn't up to your standards

If your current floor isn't meeting your needs, you may want to replace it preemptively even if it hasn't suffered any catastrophic damage yet. Some examples of this scenario include if the following is true:

  • You have flooring that's too high-maintenance for your needs
  • You have slippery flooring that creates a hazard (such as by promoting falls in the bathroom or kitchen)
  • You have flooring that's too cold underfoot

Typically, in these cases, you can replace your floor with a different floor made of a more appropriate material. For instance, you could choose a non-slip vinyl for the bathroom or kitchen or cork flooring to help keep your feet warm.

3. Your sub-flooring or underlayment needs replacement

A well-installed floor typically has both a sub-flooring layer (often made of plywood) and an underlayment layer to help insulate against cold, moisture, and other damaging forces. If your floor's underlayment or sub-flooring has worn out or become water damaged, you may need to tear up your floor to get to and replace one or both of these layers.

In some cases (such as with tile) you may be able to re-lay the same flooring material afterwards. In other cases, you'll likely need to simply replace the flooring.

4. You're renovating your floor plan

If you remove a kitchen island, move countertops and cabinets around, or make other floor plan updates, you may need new flooring installed. The gap in the flooring under the island will need to be filled, and patching a floor could end up looking like an obvious mismatch, so you may just want to redo the whole floor.

These signs can let you know that you need to arrange for a new floor installation. Laying a new floor is a job for a pro, so be sure to call a floor installation expert when you note any of the signs and symptoms of needing your floor replaced.
