3 Ways To Care For Marble Floor Tile

by Vanessa Douglas

Marble tile is packed with natural character and prized for its natural striations, which is why it has been used for centuries to signify wealth and opulence. Today, you can order marble tile in a variety of shapes, sizes, and even mosaic patterns, allowing you to customize your home with a truly stunning natural material. Here are three ways you can care for marble floor tiles so that you can enjoy your investment.

1. Ask Guests To Remove Shoes

While marble is a strong natural material, it can be scratched relatively easily, which is why it is a smart idea to ask guests to remove their shoes. By having people remove their shoes, you can avoid dirt, rocks, and other grime being trekked into your home, which can prevent those hard objects from scratching your flooring.

Try to keep a basket near your front door or another storage object where guests can put their shoes after they come into your home. It can also be helpful to put a bench or a chair near your front door, where guests can rest to take off their shoes.

2. Only Use Appropriate Cleaners

Certain cleaners, especially varieties that contain vinegar, citrus, or ammonia, can etch marble floors. Before you use any cleaner on your floors, it is important to make sure it is safe for natural stone, such as marble.

Only use products made to clean marble flooring, and steer clear from harsh cleaners. You should also avoid cleaners with abrasives, such as baking soda, since they can scratch natural stone flooring.

3. Seal The Stone

As a natural material, marble is porous, which means there is a small amount of space between the individual rock atoms. These spaces can leach in liquids and pigments, causing a stain on the stone. To prevent these issues, it is always a good idea to seal your marble floors.

Impregnator sealers are designed to microscopically bond with the stone, preventing the passage of liquids or other pigments. These sealers are easy to use, don't have to be applied often, and can last for a long time.

Anytime you have questions about how to care for marble floors, it is important to reach out to an expert in your area for help. Consider snapping a few photos of any portion of your flooring you are nervous about, sending them in, and asking a pro what they think. Stains can be professionally removed and the surface of tile can be polished, perfecting the look of your floors once again.
