3 Tips For Choosing Wood Flooring To Go With Your Farmhouse Decor

by Vanessa Douglas

If you love farmhouse décor, you may be transitioning your house to achieve the distinctive simple and rustic look. You may even need to change your flooring since it might be hard to pull off a farmhouse look with carpet or tile. Wood is always a good choice in flooring, and it's a perfect match for this type of décor. Here are some tips for choosing wood flooring for your farmhouse look.

1. Opt For Wide Planks

For an authentic look, choose wide planks. Modern wood floors have gotten narrower, but the original wood floors were made of wider planks. Pine was a common wood for flooring in the past because it is a soft type of wood and it was easier to cut into planks. However, you may prefer a more durable hardwood in your home so that scratches and gouges aren't a problem, especially if you have dogs and kids. You can still mimic the look of original wood flooring by opting for the old-style wide planks.

2. Choose A Matte Finish

Farmhouse floors tend to be lighter in color and have a matte finish. Light-colored woods are a good choice, as are gray or white finishes. However, darker woods that have character with pronounced grains and texturing can work, too. Unless you just love the look of shiny wood flooring, opting for a more muted finish for your floor is a good choice when you want an authentic-looking floor. You might even choose the look of raw wood planks.

3. Look For Texture

Consider choosing a species of wood that has large knots and thick grains running through the planks. You can even buy distressed wood planks that look like antique boards. These are made to look old and worn by wire-brushing or hand-scraping them in the factory. There is a wide variety when it comes to the appearance of wood planks. Visit a showroom and look at all your choices in person to get an idea of what you can create in your home.

When choosing the new flooring for your home, think about how it will blend in with the paint color and furnishings. You may want the floor to be the focal part of the room, but if you have a lot of farmhouse décor, you may prefer a more subtle type of flooring. Also, think about the future. The farmhouse style is popular now, but your flooring will last much longer than any decorating trend, so choosing flooring that can work with other decorating styles is something to consider, too.
