3 Signs Your Home's Laminate Flooring Has Suffered Water Damage And Needs Replacing

by Vanessa Douglas

If your home was recently flooded, you may be worried that your laminate flooring has sustained irreparable water damage. If so, look for the following signs that your home's laminate flooring has suffered water damage and needs replacing.

Laminate Material Becomes Discolored

Normally, the laminate material from which your floor is constructed is highly resistant to color changes. However, if water has soaked into the panels or remains stagnant underneath them, the constant moisture can make them become discolored.

While walking around the room, look closely for any noticeable changes of color. Some discolorations may be subtle, but you can increase their visibility by shining a flashlight on the floor at an angle.

Floor Becomes Loose and Buckles

Along with discolorations in your flooring, water damage can also make the panels come loose. Over the time, the excess moisture will also warp the material. The combination of loosened adhesive and warping panels will eventually cause areas of your floor to buckle.

As you walk across the floor, take note of any areas where you feel any panels that feel higher than the others. Then, gently press your foot into the area to see if it gives way.

If so, the flooring is loose and buckling up. If you do not replace your floor, the weight of you or other household members walking on the panels will cause the material to crack and split, creating even more damage in the already compromised flooring.

Signs of Mold under the Flooring

If there is water trapped beneath your laminate flooring, it will create a dark, moist environment in which mold spores can sprout and grow. Eventually, the mold can take hold in the subflooring, making it necessary to replace it along with the laminate.

While looking closely at your floor, try to see if there are any signs of mold growth. In the beginning stages, you may only detect a faint, musty odor when you place your face near the floor.

However, as the mold grows, the odor will become stronger. Also, you may start seeing black or dark green streaks form in the grooves between the panels. If you see either of these signs, your laminate flooring should be replaced as soon as possible to stop the spread of the mold throughout your floor and your home.

If your floor is exhibiting any of the above signs, it has sustained water damage and should be replaced. Contact a flooring company to discuss your options for having the old floor removed and new laminate flooring installed. You can also visit websites like www.allmountaintileandflooring.com.
